Founded in 2006, Slavs and Tatars is an art collective devoted to an area East of the former Berlin Wall and West of the Great Wall of China known as Eurasia. Their practice consists of three activities: publications, exhibitions and lecture-performances. In addition to launching a residency and mentorship for young professionals from their region, Slavs and Tatars opened Pickle Bar, a slavic aperitivo bar-cum-project space in Berlin-Moabit, as well as an online merchandising store: MERCZbau. Their work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at major international museums including MoMA, New York, Vienna Secession, Albertinum Dresden, and Kunsthalle Zurich, among others. Future solo exhibitions include Kunsthalle Baden Baden (February-May 2025) and FRAC Pays de la Loire, Nantes(May-September 2025). 

 

Slavs and Tatars’ work can be found in major public collections in the United States, the Middle East, and Europe including MHKA, Antwerp; Fondazione Re: Rebaudengo, Turin; Dallas Museum of Art; Tate Modern; MoMA; Sharjah Art Foundation et al; they have published more than dozen books to date, including  most recently Лук Бук (or Look Book) (Distanz Verlag, 2022) and The Contest of the Fruits(MIT Press, 2021) as well as their translation of the legendary Azeri satire Molla Nasreddin (IB Tauris, 2017).
