Maria Loizidou – The Place I Am Not
Maria Loizidou
The Place I Am Not
Freud Museum and The Hellenic Centre, London
25 September – 20 October 2024
This unique collaboration explores the themes of identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s life in London—a city where he created a home away from home without ever truly feeling a sense of belonging. The exhibition reflects on these diasporic experiences, central to the artistic practice of Loizidou, who engages in an open dialogue with spaces, objects, and stories—elements that are transitory yet pivotal in shaping hybrid identities.
At both venues, the artworks will delve into fragmented identities, emotional traumas, and diasporic realities, offering insights into what it means to be an immigrant. “The Place I Am Not” questions the elusive concept of home, the construction of safe spaces, and the complex interplay between environment and identity. This exhibition promises to be a profound exploration of how people of the diaspora shape their sense of self and establish places of security and belonging in unfamiliar territories.
The exhibition is made possible with the support of NEON Organization for Culture and Development.
The publication The Place I Am Not is supported by Pylon Art & Culture, Athos Demetriou Associates LLC and AA&U, For Architecture, Art and Urbanism.
