Karolina Krasouli investigates variations of fairy tales in different places and times, and the potential internal connections between those narratives. The starting point for How to Remember (Plans) (2022) is the folk tale “The Βridge of Arta”, as it is presented – in two different but similar versions – in Giorgos Ioannou’s Paraloges (1970) and Marguerite Yourcenar’s text “The Milk of Death”, published in 1963 in the short story collection Oriental Tales. In an approach to the concept and technique of the frame narrative, Krasouli presents a work of painting with indirect visual references to the short story. Attempting to meta-narrate and assemble/interweave the two stories, Krasouli has made a painting composition consisting of canvases hand-sewn together, painted in gesso and oil in soft pastel colours, ‘woven’ with other elements painted on paper, and ‘sewn together’ with words or traces of writing. Her work alludes to books, folders, and folded pages.
