Detailed description for expanded/click-on version:

Between 2008 and 2016, Greece lost more than a quarter of its GDP due to the Eurozone debt crisis and the severe consequences of the global financial crisis that preceded it. This figure has often been compared to the losses suffered under wartime conditions. Yet, the economic, political, and social conflicts that unfolded in Greece during this turbulent period also had a deep cultural character. Its origins can be traced back many generations in the past, while its detritus remains integral parts of the country’s present. More than anywhere else, this has been reflected in the rapid rise of a visual language based on Greek antiquity, which became a symbol of resistance for both right-wing and left-wing political actors. This oxymoronic instrumentalization of antiquity is indicative of the forging of a new identity that could be seen as a remedy for a much deeper, ‘structural’ identity crisis. In his lecture-performance, Greek artist, theorist, and educator Bill Balaskas will deconstruct this identity crisis through the lens of the post-crisis visual language inspired by antiquity, while also employing it as a means to reflect on the perceived crisis of Western culture at large. Using his own practice as a starting point, Balaskas will bring together a variety of media, contemporary and historical sources, and materials to examine a distinct case of identity crisis, as well as the wider context that this may reveal.
