SAMOVAR SWELL

Slavs and Tatars
Samovar Swell
Museo Jumex, CDMX
9 April – 19 July 2026
Samovar Swell is Slavs and Tatars’ newest commission at the Museo Jumex. Conceived as a shared and exuberant experience, Samovar Swell foregrounds multilingualism, via performative and sound-based interventions. At the center of the installation is a samovar—the traditional vessel used to heat and serve tea from Turkey to Russia and Central Asia—which embodies a gesture of hospitality and gathering. An apt vessel for our times, the samovar is constantly in a state of simmering or “boil,” both literally and orally. A series of publications are displayed on rahlé —X-shaped supports traditionally used to hold sacred texts during reading or recitation—alongside kilims to sit on. The soundtrack has been composed by Lubomir Grzelak aka Lutto Lento.
