Lighthouse of the Earth
Group exhibition: Presented by Wilhelmina on Hydra
This exhibition brings together works by International artists from Greece, Argentina, Mexico, India, Ecuador and the USA that explore and expand the themes in Helen Hunt-Jackson’s poem “God’s Lighthouses” and Ken Follet’s “Pillars of the Earth”.
In troubled times whether in existential, physical or political strife, the lighthouse and the cathedral as metaphors for art rise with renewed purpose and meaning inside galleries and museums as that creative force which continues to illuminate and guide us to safe harbour.
At the heart of Hunt-Jackson’s poem is the image of sailors navigating the stormy seas being saved by the guiding rays of the lighthouse while Follet’s novel is a story of love, loyalty, corruption and social upheaval set against the backdrop of the building of a great medieval cathedral.
Given the exhibition’s position by the sea on the site of a former shipyard the gallery is imagined both as a lighthouse out of which the artist’s works shine for life’s navigators ; and a cathedral in which the artworks are the foundational pillars of a sanctuary which provides respite and escape with a few words of warning not to be lead astray by decoys and false prophets.
