On Thursday, 19 June, Kalfayan Galleries, are presenting the first solo exhibition of New York-based artist Panos Tsagaris at their gallery, 11 Haritos Street, Kolonaki, Athens. The exhibition, “I am the Sun in His Rising”, features a series of large-scale drawings, as well as a series of large photographs.
In this exhibition, Tsagaris continues his personal exploration into the occult and mysticism and the works that are featured are a result of the beginning of this journey. His drawings act as meditation diagrams and mandalas, not merely as aesthetic explorations. Each drawing is the result of a series of purification rituals in which a transformation occurs and then becomes a mirror. The drawing retains the healing energy evoked during that ritual and is reflected back onto the viewer.
The artist combines iconography and symbolism from occult manuscripts and creates his own magical diagrams that tell us stories of an existence beyond power, pain and injustice. These diagrams reflect messages of universal love and unity that exist beyond our temporary materialistic “reality”. Through his ongoing quest for enlightenment, Tsagaris has found himself walking between light and darkness, exposed to their equal beauty.

Panos Tsagaris (b. 1979, Athens, Greece) received his BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver, Canada. He has exhibited extensively in Miami, New York, Vancouver, Athens, Berlin, Vienna, Milan, Paris, Hong Kong et al.
