Antonis Donef
The Yellow Wilderness
Past
6 October – 14 November 2009
11 Haritos Street, Kolonaki
On Tuesday, 6 October 2009, between 20.00 – 22.00, Kalfayan Galleries will present a solo exhibition of new works by Antonis Donef.
For this exhibition, Kalfayan Galleries will be transformed into an “open book”. Antonis Donef creates a mosaic of images based on the re-composition of knowledge. His elaborate pen drawings are layered over the printed images and words of newspaper clippings, encyclopedias and old books, presenting a highly personal re-consideration of knowledge. His intricate linear script and minute drawings enhance each work with energy and meaning. Memories, history and ideas are evoked through the overlapping of his characteristic lacey calligraphy on the printed material, a palimpsest that hints at stories within stories that describe a world congested with information. In a certain way, it is as though he is impersonating many characters in order to imitate the surrealistic game of the cadavre exquis in which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled.
The artist was born in 1978 and lives and works in Athens. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and the University of Fine Arts in Madrid. He has participated in numerous solo and group shows and in 2005 he was one of the six graduates of the School of Fine Arts to receive an award in the framework of the “A Great Moment for Culture: The Presentation of New Creators – Eurobank Private Banking”. In 2009 he participated in the exhibition ‘Visual Arts in Greece III’ at the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki. His works are included in collections in Greece and Italy.
